Leadership at HLC

Each member of HLC’s staff works to fulfill HLC’s leadership goals regarding the thought leadership role of HLC in higher education and all related processes: accreditation, student borrowing, student success, equity, state support etc., all of which are currently undergoing an unprecedented level of public scrutiny. The enhancement of leadership at education-related institutions and organizations must become an organizational priority to successfully restore public confidence in higher education.

President and Executive Leadership Team

President Barbara Gellman-Danley and her Executive Leadership Team establish the direction and provide support to the HLC community to be active leaders in higher education.

Staff Liaisons

HLC assigns each member college or university a staff liaison, who serves as the institution‘s primary contact. Staff liaisons advise institutions about HLC’s policies and procedures and help coordinate the peer review and decision-making process.

Due Process as Leadership

Peer Corps

HLC maintains a Peer Corps of approximately 1,500 faculty and administrators from its member colleges and universities. They are responsible for evaluating whether institutions meet HLC’s Criteria for Accreditation and other requirements, as well as for helping members advance within the context of their mission.

Institutional Actions Council

The Institutional Actions Council (IAC) makes recommendations to the Board or takes action on recommendations from peer review teams. The IAC is composed of approximately 140 members representing HLC member institutions and the public.

Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees decides specific actions regarding member institutions, sets HLC accreditation policies, and conducts HLC’s fiduciary responsibilities.

Appeals Body

The Appeals Body is selected by the Board of Trustees and a panel is set if an institution appeals an adverse action of the Board prior to the action becoming final. In these instances, an Appeals Panel hears the case and has the authority to affirm, amend or remand the action of the Board.
